Louisiana Legislature’s Standing Committees
Louisiana’s legislature is divided into the Senate and the House of Representatives. Each chamber uses standing committees to review and advance legislation in specific subject areas. Click any committee to learn more about its focus and membership.
Agriculture, Forestry, Aquaculture, and Rural Development
Hears bills on agricultural chemistry, economics, research, production, promotion, marketing, and services. Also covers forestry regulation, livestock and meat products, rural development, soil conservation, and related topics.
Commerce
Hears bills on banking and its regulation, corporations, credit unions, small loan companies, licensing and standards of professions, businesses, and occupations. Also covers tourism and communications by telephone, telegraph, radio, television, or other media.
Education
Hears bills on primary, secondary, vocational, and adult education. Also covers colleges and universities, state and public libraries, cultural affairs, museums, and the school lunch program.
Environmental Quality
Hears bills on air quality, hazardous waste, pollution, solid waste regulation, water resources, and environmental control and regulation generally.
Finance
Hears bills on the appropriation of state funds, budget requirements and procedures, fiscal controls, the general appropriations bill, and general finance matters.
Health and Welfare
Hears bills on child care facilities, elderly affairs, public and private hospitals, nursing homes, veterans affairs, vocational rehabilitation, and other health and welfare topics.
Insurance
Hears bills on casualty, health, life, property, and other insurance topics.
Judiciary A
May hear bills on the Attorney General, District Attorneys, prosecutors, clerks of court, the Department of Corrections, prisons, jails, rehabilitation, juvenile code, criminal code, the Department of Public Safety, state police, Sheriffs, and the National Guard. Also covers the courts, family law, Civil Code, controlled dangerous substances, weapons and explosives, and the administration of criminal justice generally. May also hear bills related to constitutional rights or state boundary lines.

Local and Municipal Affairs
Hears bills on local government activities and their employees, parish governing authorities and tax collection, local tax revenue, and urban, parochial, and regional planning. Also covers drainage, sewerage, water, economic development districts, and the Department of Urban and Community Affairs.
Natural Resources
Hears bills on conservation, mines, minerals, mineral codes, parks and recreation, pipelines, wildlife and fisheries, public and private lands, and other natural resources.
Retirement
Hears bills on retirement systems supported in whole or in part by state funds, and retirement of state officials, employees, judges, school employees, teachers, and other state employees.
Revenue and Fiscal Affairs
Hears bills on taxes, revenue measures including collection, bond issuance, the bond portion of the comprehensive state capital budget, the Department of Revenue and Taxation, the Tax Commission and Board of Tax Appeals, and the investment of public monies.
Senate and Governmental Affairs
