LORI Statement on TPS Termination               for Haiti and Syria

Baton Rouge, LA — The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision allowing the Department of Homeland Security to move forward with terminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian and Syrian nationals has created new uncertainty for families, workers, employers, students, and communities. LORI is deeply disappointed by the ruling, which affects people who cannot safely return home because of armed conflict, disaster, or other extraordinary conditions.

The ruling directly affects approximately 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians living and working legally in the United States and raises concerns for the broader TPS program, which protects approximately 1.3 million people from 17 countries. Many TPS holders have lived here for years or decades as parents of U.S. citizen children, small business owners, caregivers, teachers, health care workers, construction workers, agricultural workers, and vital contributors to local economies.

This decision is about more than immigration status; it affects family stability, workforce continuity, public safety, and the values we choose to uphold. It also threatens to separate U.S. citizen children from parents, create financial hardship, and disrupt industries that rely on experienced workers.

“At LORI, we believe our communities are strongest when families are safe, workers are protected, and every person is treated with dignity. As someone who came to this country as a refugee, I know what it means to rebuild a life after loss. TPS holders have worked, paid taxes, raised families, filled critical workforce needs, and contributed to the places they call home. LORI strongly condemns the harm this ruling will cause and urges Congress and federal leaders to create permanent pathways to stability for TPS holders and their families.”

— Dauda Sesay, Founder and CEO, Louisiana Organization for Refugees and Immigrants

LORI’s work is rooted in the belief that Louisiana can be a place where refugees and immigrants find “opportunity, dignity, and a place to call home.” This decision moves the country away from that vision, while strengthening our resolve to stand with affected families.

LORI calls on Congress and federal agencies to protect TPS holders, preserve work authorization, prevent family separation, and advance lasting legislative solutions. We also urge employers, faith leaders, partners, service providers, and local communities to stand with impacted families.
