Anti-Immigrant Bills in Louisiana

Protecting Families, Advancing Justice — Immigrant and refugee communities are a vital part of Louisiana’s strength, culture, and future.

Our Shared Wins

Ending the 287(g) Agreement (2022)

After years of organizing, Louisiana became the first state in the South to end its 287(g) agreement with ICE. While this was a groundbreaking victory, new policies now attempt to revive similar collaborations through creation of an ICE partnership unit in the Attorney General’s office. This shows that even as we win, vigilance remains essential.

Defeat of SB 279 (2024)

Hundreds of community members and over 600 advocates mobilized to stop this discriminatory proposal. Its defeat protected immigrant families and reaffirmed Louisiana’s commitment to fairness and equity.

These outcomes remind us that meaningful change is possible when communities unite.

Current Legislative Challenges

Despite progress, harmful laws continue to pass in Louisiana. Each one has real consequences for families, neighbors, and communities:

Act 399 [SB 15]

Criminalizing Non-Cooperation

Increases risks of family separation, fuels fear, and undermines trust with law enforcement.

Act 351 [HB 307]

Verifying Immigration Status for Public Assistance

Families—including children—may lose food, healthcare, and housing support.

Act 292 [HB 544]

Coded Driver’s Licenses

Stigmatizes lawful immigrant residents and increases discrimination.

Act 419 [SB 100]

Additional License & Voting Restrictions

Reinforces coded IDs, fueling stigma and mistrust.

Act 264 [HB 303]

Special ICE-Aligned Unit

Expands ICE’s reach, deepens fear, and erodes community trust.

Act 17 [HB 436]

Restricting Legal Claims for Immigrants

Denies undocumented immigrants fair compensation after accidents.
